5. SUFFERING FOR CHRIST’S SAKE (PHIL 1:23-26)

5. SUFFERING FOR CHRIST’S SAKE (PHIL 1:23-26):

Paul writes that he is hard-pressed between the two. His desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on their account. Paul is eager to die for the sake of the Gospel and Christ, as well as he is willing to live for His glory and to save others in the midst of the challenges and sufferings. And so he states that he is torn between the two. He further proclaims that he prefers to leave the present world and be with the Lord, which is far ahead and makes him feel good. But on the other hand, it is also important for him to live in the flesh for guiding and enlightening the church of God.

Paul further writes that he is convinced of that, he knows that he will remain and continue with them all, for their progress and joy in the faith, so that in him they have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because He comes to them again. Though Paul personally prefers to depart from this world and be with Christ, he is persuaded to remain among them and continue his life with them, as he wants them to make themselves better and rejoice because of their faith in the Lord and glorify Him through their words and actions because of His presence with them.

Stimulations for Self-Reflection:

1.      What are the two things between which Paul is hard pressed?

2.      What is Paul’s desire? Why?

3.      Which is more necessary on the recipients’ account, according to Paul? Why?

4.      On which was Paul convinced?

5.      Why was Paul convinced to remain with them?

6.      How was Paul open to his calling to glorify God?

7.      How shall we be open to accept the will and call of God?

How shall we be useful to the people around us, in glorifying God?
