7. LOOKING INTO OTHERS’ INTERESTS (PHIL 2:1-4)
7. LOOKING INTO OTHERS’ INTERESTS (PHIL 2:1-4):
After
writing about the importance of living for God, Paul emphasizes that if there
is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the
Spirit, any affection and sympathy, they shall complete his joy by being of the
same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Paul reminds the believers about some of the good characteristics that
they have had and wishes that they should continue having them through the genuine
fellowship with one another, for making his joy full. Paul wishes that
they should have their life’s direction and purpose that is built based on
Christ, an attitude of supporting one another with true love, working together
with the guidance of the Holy Spirit in them, and having a sense of belonging
with one another by understanding each other.
Paul
then instructs to do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility
count others more significant than themselves. Everyone has their own interests
and passions, but here Paul talks about the gratification of the self that
affects others’ interests and well-being. A person will try to respect the other
person and uphold the other person if they perceive them to be God’s image,
and think them to be better than themselves, though they may not have great
power, position, or possessions.
Paul
then writes that each of them shall look not only to his own interests, but
also to the interests of others. Paul adds that the believers shall not just
consider others better but also look into the interests of others. The
believers shall always strive hard to fulfil their genuine interests that
don’t affect themselves or others in any way, and also support others in their
interests that are genuine.
Stimulations for Self-Reflection:
1. How would Paul’s joy be complete?
2. What
should the believers do? Why?
3. How should a person consider another person? Why?
4. Whose
interests should a believer look into?
5. What
are the qualities that make our leaders glad?
6. How shall we avoid being selfish and conceited?
7. How shall we be humble to consider others better?
