19. SHARING IN THE TIMES OF NEED (PHIL 4:14-20)
19. SHARING IN THE TIMES OF NEED (PHIL 4:14-20):
Paul
conveys to the Philippians that he can be adaptable to the comfortable
circumstance as well as the needful circumstance alike, and get his strength
through Christ. And then Paul acknowledged Philippians that it was kind of
them to share his trouble. The Philippians were very kind and lovely to support
Paul in his need. And they Philippians themselves know that in the beginning of
the gospel, when he left Macedonia, no church entered into partnership with him
in giving and receiving, except them only. There would have been constant
communication between Paul and the Philippians, which makes him say that they
know about his collaborations. Paul travelled to different places, and when he
started his way out from Macedonia, there was no collaboration of mutual
support, except for the Philippians only. Paul acknowledges that even in
Thessalonica, they sent him help for his needs once and again. The Philippians were
generous in their giving, and they took care of the needs of Paul twice when he
was ministering in Thessalonica.
Paul
then clarifies that not that he seeks the gift, but he seeks the fruit that
increases to their credit. He had received full payment and more. He is well
supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts they sent, a fragrant
offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. Being able to handle
every situation alike, Paul is not concerned about receiving support from
others, but he is more concerned about their transformation of heart to use
everything for the glory of God, which will be to their credit. The Philippians’
gracious gifts were abundant as they sent through Epaphroditus, who is a
fellow worker with Paul. The offerings from Philippians are complete and
genuine, and so it is received without any hindrance from God.
Paul
then blesses the Philippians and glorifies God by writing that his God will
supply every need of theirs according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus,
and to their God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen. Because of the
generous contribution by the Philippians, Paul affirms that they will receive
their reward from God, and their needs will be met without any hindrances, as everything that is seen or unseen is from God and belongs to Him for the glory
of Christ Jesus. Paul then clearly indicates and wishes with affirmation that
whether it is giving or receiving, glory should belong to God and our Father
eternally.
Stimulations for Self-Reflection:
1. What
did the Philippians do when Paul was in trouble?

did the Philippians do when Paul was in Thessalonica?
4. What
does Paul seek, and what does he seek not?
5. Why does Paul seek the fruit that increases to their credit?
6. What
does Paul mention about things that were received?
7. How does Paul bless the Philippians? Why?
8. How does Paul finally acknowledge God?
9. How shall we be kind to the ministers of God?
10. How shall we respond when we come to know the needs of people around us?
11. How shall we look at the gifts that were shared with us?
